Pollution Prevention The Anniston Army Depot performs maintenance on heavy- and light-tracked combat vehicles and associated components, as well as on individual and crew-served weapons, land combat missiles, and small arms. The activities at ANAD results in the generation of waste, air emissions, and wastewater. In order to minimize its impact on the environment, ANAD embraces P2 practices.   P2 is defined under the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) as “source reduction” and other practices that reduce or eliminate the creation of pollutants through the following methods: Increased efficiency in the use of raw materials, energy, water, or other resources, or Protection of natural resources by conservation. “Source reduction” is defined under PPA as any practice that: Reduces the amount of any hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant entering any waste stream or otherwise released into the environment (including fugitive emissions) prior to recycling, treatment, or disposal; and Reduces the hazards to public health and the environment associated with the release of such substances, pollutants, or contaminants.   Source reduction includes equipment or technology modifications, process or procedure modifications, reformulation or redesign of products, substitution of raw materials, and improvements in housekeeping, maintenance, training, or inventory control.   ANAD’s P2 Program falls under the Environmental Compliance Division. The P2 Program Manager coordinates ANAD’s P2 Program. The P2 Program Manager is the lead on the P2 Steering Committee. At least once per quarter, the steering committee meets to discuss existing and future projects. Future projects are either recommended by ANAD employees or by team members. These projects must reduce waste or material usage, reduce employee exposure, reduce energy usage, etc.   Because it provides a means for maintaining compliance with environmental permits and protecting surrounding resources, P2 is essential to sustain ANAD’s mission.
